Choosing the right video - Green Screen

If you’ve decided that you need video as part of your businesses marketing strategy it can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to deciding what style of video to go for.

For instance would you choose to have an on location shoot resulting in a full scale promotional video showcasing your business? Or a more focused testimonial and interview led piece that educates people about the ethos behind your company?

It doesn’t stop there either; will you film indoors or outdoors, use graphics or cutaway footage to support your message?

Over the coming weeks we’re going to look at different types of video and how they can be used effectively to enhance your business.

This week we’ll look at green screen.

Green screen, more commonly known as chroma keying is a process where a subject is literally filmed in front of a green screen. Then in post-production the green background is replaced with anything desired.

It’s used in a lot in movies to put actors in places they literately couldn’t go to or film in. But for a corporate or business video you probably don’t want to be delivering your message from inside a volcano or the surface of another planet!

For testimonials it’s great if you want the focus solely on the person speaking. We can insert a crisp, white background with a slight vignette and straight away the viewer’s eye and attention will be right on the testimonial.

You could even add graphics, making it more visual by having bullet points or facts and figures animate on screen while you’re talking.

It also gives you options, if you’re short on time or can’t make decisions about where you’d like to film, use green screen.  You can have something elaborate in the background or simply opt for an office or outdoor setting  once you’ve reviewed the footage.

Make sure you get someone who has experience with chroma keying if you decide this is the way for you. It’s a fairly straightforward process if it’s filmed correctly, but if areas like framing, lighting and  positioning aren’t thought through it’s going to be one tough edit and the final result will likely look poor and inconsistent.

Green screen is a great way of clearly communicating a focused message while retaining control over certain on screen elements. You can have a video that is in line with your corporate branding and subtly combine animated graphics to underpin your message.
